Before Prince Harry laid it bare in Spare, Netflix’s The Crown series was the masses’ window into his royal family. Offering viewers a front-row seat to the melodrama of the British monarchy, the show became an instant hit. With its impeccable costumes and riveting performances, it transformed the past into a sumptuous spectacle through the five seasons it has released so far. Now that Prince Harry also shares heavy involvement with the OTT that created it, fans wonder if he will lend some help to its upcoming last season too.

The folks at Netflix have finally revealed if that is possible.

In an interview with Variety, The Crown’s creator, Peter Morgan, revealed that he had refrained from reading Spare to gain insight into the family around which his show rotates because he did not want the book to “inhabit” his “thinking” while shooting the final season. Furthermore, he and Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that neither had even spoken to Prince Harry about the show’s final season, despite it heavily covering the 39-year-old’s early life.

Since the Duke is involved in an agreement with Netflix, he crosses paths with the company’s CEO often. However, Sarandos confessed to having kept “a wall around this topic” when they met “for obvious reasons.” Meanwhile, while Morgan felt “sympathy” for the prince, he still did not “want to read” Spare. In a way, these comments were rather puzzling, considering how the upcoming season will focus on the prince.

Not only that, but Prince Harry is also a self-proclaimed viewer of the show.

When The Crown first came out, it was met with a lot of backlash from British audiences for depicting the royal family in such controversial light. It was also believed that the family was mostly offended by their depiction in the series. However, on an episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden from 2021, Prince Harry revealed that he had watched the show and was “comfortable” with it.

According to him, unlike tabloids that often published factually incorrect news, The Crown was “fictional” and did not project the charade of being “news”. Well, now that the show is planning on bringing back a long-buried ugly topic regarding him, the father of two may not be as ‘comfortable’ as he was earlier.
