Netflix’s The Witcher may never receive credit as an exceptional adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher or even as a sufficiently captivating narrative for the video game. While Henry Cavill kept on fueling the audience’s interest with his portrayal of Geralt and devotion to the source material, as he bid farewell to the show in Season 3, it ended up in a plot puzzlement. However, the moments from The Witcher Season 3 that featured the titular trio or found family, as the fandom calls them, will always remain a winner.

The moments shared between Geralt and Yennefer as they tried their best to prepare Ciri for what was to come and, more specifically, the moments between Ciri and Yennefer won everyone’s hearts. But they were not easy to achieve.

Not easy becoming the unconventional mother-daughter duo from The Witcher

In Season 3 of The Witcher, the constantly changing narratives and dynamics left not only fans but also the characters themselves confused. Anya Chalotra revealed in an exclusive interview with Vulture before the Season 3 premiere that after all the developments that had happened, it was quite difficult to become a mother figure to Ciri. Chalotra rightfully asked, “How can she trust Yennefer?” while discussing her relationship with Freya Allan’s Ciri.

While it may have been difficult at the beginning, Allan and Chalotra’s scenes together were among the most popular scenes from the season. Especially as the troubled sorceress became not only a mentor for Ciri but also a mother. However, it was not just the lack of screen time they had together that made it harder for Chalotra and Allan to seamlessly become a mother-daughter duo.

Season 2 and Season 3 were released almost two years apart. Therefore, many fans seem to have forgotten a key moment from the finale of the former season that makes Ciri and Yennefer’s newfound love all the more confusing.

Did Yennefer hurt Ciri in Season 2?

One of the main reasons behind Chalotra questioning why Allan’s character would even trust her was due to the developments of The Witcher Season 2. At one point, Yennefer was just a hair away from sacrificing Ciri to gain back her magical powers. While the show made a hero out of the moment, it was very right for Chalotra to question how Ciri would move past such a scene.

Andrzej Sapkowski presented Yennefer as a very complex character in the books. Her character exhibits complexity as she frequently resorts to harming others to secure her own survival. However, Sapkowski at no point paints her as a distasteful character. In fact, her determination to survive is the reason why fans love her so much.
