‘Harry & Meghan’ Director Liz Garbus Reveals What Surprised Her About the Couple While Working With Them
The Netflix bombshell, Harry & Meghan, was definitely one of the most-watched documentaries on the streamer so far. Having dropped some nukes at their estranged family, the couple attracted a lot of viewers across the world. The show’s Oscar-nominee director Liz Garbus, along with Chanel Psynik, joined Envelope for an interview. The breakdown of the filming process took an interesting turn as they talked about the limitations and sensitivities of the show in great detail. Thus, with the estranged couple making headlines every day, what are the things that surprised Garbus and Psynik as the show’s executive producers and creative partners?
Reported by Los Angeles Times, the directors opened up about what surprised them most about the Duke and the Duchess. Garbus took no time to reply that the couple’s relationship and the element of love were what surprised her the most. The pair’s love story element felt “authentic and right” as if it was meant to be, she added. She also admitted that it was truly comfortable to watch the Prince and Princess do normal things together. For instance, making coffee and sitting on the couch, and so on.
Garbus knew Meghan Markle for over a year at that point. Hence, she was more surprised by the Prince with whom she did not have much interaction ever. The executive director claims that the Prince, in face-to-face conversations, is quite talkative and sharp. Unlike the royals, who rarely talk and are tight-lipped, the Prince was free and shared his thoughts confidently. She also commended the Duke for facing his past problems head-on and the Duchess for enduring all the criticism with courage.

According to Liz Garbus, this show proved to be quite satisfying for her. That was possible since she and Meghan Markle had “worked well together.” In fact, that was one of the main reasons that Garbus and her television company Story Syndicate could get hired among the three major companies that produced the show. Even if the couple when no longer senior members of the royal family, they were still royals. Moreover, according to Psynik, the production team had to be extremely careful while handling the couple’s personal stories and archives.
Grabus shared that they kept the shooting low-key and secretive until Netflix announced it. Thus, all the stories and experiences shared were all belonging to the couple, and those who made an appearance in them. There was no involvement of any other media source like the British press.
