‘Harry & Meghan’ Composer Reveals How the Docuseries Has Helped Give Voice to Themes Like “Social Issues”
Netflix’s chartbuster, Harry & Meghan, was a lot of things ranging from a thought-provoking docuseries to an exposure of how The Firm can go to any lengths to safeguard its image. However, it was also a breeding ground of widespread outrage and controversies. While many found the Duke and Duchess of Sussex courageous enough to lay bare the truth about the royals, others labeled them as some “poor rich kids” who could never stop whining. However, the team that worked closely with the couple has a different perspective to share.
After Oscar-nominee Liz Garbus recently unpacked her magical experience of the entire directing process, the show’s composer also has something to add. Speaking to Variety, Gil Talmi revealed how he had to brainstorm for hours on end to do justice to the couple’s past and current challenges. Recalling the traditional music around royal subjects, Talmi revealed how the usual “neoclassical piano, strings, and orchestra” wouldn’t have worked in this case.

Prince Harry’s rollercoaster of a life of turmoil has a daunting challenge to the musical ethos of the past. To portray the intricate details of the tumultuous life of the Sussexes, Talmi incorporated darker electronics and heavy symphonies into the series. The composer believes it was the responsibility of the team to convey the truth. He thus never wanted to be sonically colonizing, but rather really authentic.
Instead of composing music for regal characters, he made music that aligned with the show’s themes. According to him, the series, catalyzed by his music encompassed themes such as “compassion, fear, and systematic and social issues” He further noted how his favorite chord was the one he incorporated around the title sequence, “We Know the Truth”. Gil Talmi wanted to deliver to the audience the darker currents that the couple had to withstand. And so he did.
So, what was the series all about?
