Good News for ‘Ozark’ Fans as Jason Bateman and Laura Linney Reunite for Netflix’s Next Big Hit in 2025
It has been three years since Ozark wrapped up its final season. While showrunner Chris Mundy has hinted that the door is not entirely closed on the possibility of a fifth season, it is still very uncertain whether the show will ever return to our screens. A big part of the Netflix series’ success was the undeniable chemistry between Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Both actors have spoken about their working relationship, and some believe their contrasting backgrounds, cultures, and styles contributed to their dynamic partnership.

In addition to starring in Ozark, both Jason Bateman and Laura Linney showcased their talents behind the camera as directors. Now, they are about to flex those creative muscles again in a new Netflix drama miniseries created by Zach Baylin and Kate Susman, The New York City–set drama has signed Laura Linney on as a director, marking an Ozark reunion. Meanwhile, Linney will direct Episodes 3 and 4, though she will not be stepping in front of the camera this time.
From the premise, it sounds like Bateman might be playing yet another morally ambiguous—or outright shady—character. His role is described as a “chaotic brother” who threatens to upend everything his sibling, played by Jude Law, has built. However, Linney has previously had some reservations about directing a project Bateman is involved in, which was the reason behind her hesitations about directing Ozark.
Linney once shared how directing Ozark could have complicated her working relationship with Bateman, with whom she has a great rapport off-screen as well.
Laura Linney hesitated to direct Ozark because of Jason Bateman
On Jason Bateman’s SmartLess podcast, Laura Linney opened up about her reluctance to direct episodes of Ozark. She was concerned that stepping into a directing role might strain her close working relationship with Bateman. She also did not want to risk being seen as an “idiot directors who you’re saddled with,", who did not have a clear vision for the production. “I didn’t want to be one of those people,” Linney shared.

Despite her initial reservations, Linney eventually directed Episode 11 of Ozark’s final season Her work received high praise from Bateman, who called it "incredible." Even so, Linney remained modest about her directorial abilities and described herself as an actor who occasionally directs rather than a full-time director. With Black Rabbit, fans can look forward to seeing Bateman and Linney combine their directorial talents once again.
