Stranger Things season 5 should be more than halfway through filming by now. And every fan out there is eager to finally get their closure with the sci-fi series in the upcoming year. In the last season, viewers saw how the Upside Down crept into Hawkins- and that cliffhanger raised a ton of questions about how the fifth and final season will get underway. Recently, Gaten Matarazzo shed light on that very question.

From what can be pieced together from Matarazzo’s comments, the fifth season will kick off quite differently than before, which typically started on a cheerful note before gradually diving into the darker side of things.

Gaten Matarazzo recently sat down for an interview with The Direct, where he tackled the hottest question of the moment- what will Stranger Things season 5 be like? While he kept most details under wraps, as he and the rest of the cast have been warned to do, Matarazzo did reveal that season 5 will pick up right where season 4 left off. The 22-year-old mentioned, “Things are a lot different going into this season comparatively to the past ones".

For one, Hawkins is finally well aware that “some **it is going down” now that the Upside Down has broken into the real world. As per Matarazzo, the main goal for the final season will be to prevent this parallel world from completely taking over Hawkins. Talking about his character, Dustin Henderson, Matarazzo reflected on the grief his character has been dealing with due to Eddie’s loss, played by Joseph Quinn in the last season, and this emotional journey will carry over into season 5 as well.

In an interview with In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast, Gaten Matarazzo told host and senior editor Vinnie Mancuso that the Stranger Things cast has officially read the script for the series finale. This script reading took place on his birthday, September 8, which Matarazzo found to be a truly “full-circle” moment. “Finally seeing how it all wraps up was intense and beautiful,” he added.

As for Dustin, Matarazzo wants to humble him a bit. Dustin tends to see himself as the smartest of the group, but this attitude can sometimes come off as arrogance at times. “I’d like to see him be knocked down a few pegs,” Matarazzo told USA Today. And given the loss Dustin experienced in season 4, he will likely not have the same confidence in his plans and beliefs in season 5 as he has had in the past.
