“Fu*k Star Wars!”- Here’s Why ‘Rebel Moon’ Producers Celebrate Zack Snyder’s Ideas Being Rejected From the $70 Billion Franchise
The infamous 2012 pitch of Zack Snyder, Rebel Moon, is all set to bring an epic space saga to our OTT screen this December. But it was not an overnight journey to reach here. An idea in the making for years; the Man of Steel director started shooting for the Netflix-acquired film in 2022. A second stint with Netflix after Army of the Dead, the movie is set to release in two parts, with an impressive budget of $166 million combined. Moreover, Snyder’s expertise in crafting different and multiple worlds is no secret.
While the film was originally going to be injected into the Star Wars franchise, it took a separate path to work as a different universe. Recently, it seems like the producers are very glad it has separated from the $70 billion franchise, and here is why.

It is not every day that producers rejoice at being rejected from their former plans. Rebel Moon was originally set to be a Star Wars film inspired by the ‘Seven Samurai’. Not only did the Justice League director stress for original characters but also an R-rated script. This led to a rejection from being an extended arm of the multi-billion dollar franchise. As per Film, the upcoming space saga’s producer, Eric Newman, recalled how Zack Snyder intended to make it a Seven Jedi film, and a “Fu*k Star Wars! Let’s do this as a TV show” later, as a television show.
While it did not end up being a series, it did get its own standalone stage on Netflix. Meanwhile, the producers heaved a sigh of relief at the movie’s press meeting. Deborah Snyder recalled how she thought their “hands are going to be tied” if they had gone the Star Wars way. They had gained quite a lot of experience working on innumerable action-packed films created in different superhero worlds. The 300 director’s skills would finally be put to use for the science-fantasy movie. He even revealed to Tudum that his infamous director’s cut would have an extra 60 minutes on screen.
The Watchmen director is known for his director’s cuts. Separate from the mainstream audience, he targets much more mature filmgoers who want to dive deep into his universes.

Not only does the director’s cut provide an extension to events, but also gets into the psyche of intricately woven characters. The Man of Steel director talked about Rebel Moon’s extended cut, saying, “I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version.” His fans are no strangers to his director cuts. While he does not recall where exactly his passion for extended cuts began, it did not always come easy.
His versions were not always accepted with open arms as they are now. The “deeper versions” did not exactly cater to all audiences in the mainstream media, and the director had to “fight for it in the past.”
