As the final moments of The Witcher season three wrapped up on the small screens, it left everyone with an oddly unsettling feeling. Though fans were bummed thinking they will not see the beloved Henry Cavill in his armor, they were also happy with the makers’ attempts at bringing the show closer to original source. However, throughout the three seasons of Lauren Schmidt Hissrich’s fantasy drama, one crucial aspect has been the backbone of the show.

Every character of the award-winning TV series and their storylines centers on the same element. Four years back, Freya Allan, who plays one of the key characters of the franchise, shed light on the heart of The Witcher

During a 2019 interview with TheWitcher.tv, Allan answered many questions about her character from the Netflix show. The now 22-year-old actress highlighted her favorite aspects of Ciri and also revealed her secret sauce for nailing the character. When the interviewer asked her about the heart of The Witcher, the actress said, “I’d say family for all the characters”. The Gunpowder Milkshake star further went on to explain how every character and their experiences are linked with family.

In the actress’ words, “Whether it’s the families they were born into, or the families they are destined to be with,” the show really is about families, especially for Ciri. Geralt and Yennefer assumed a parental role to Ciri. Meanwhile, the Emperor of Nilfgaard was Ciri’s long-lost father. It was Ciri’s family and ancestry that became the source of all her powers. This also led to people hunting for her, forming the premise of the show. Despite having a powerful ancestry, it was Ciri’s destined family that protected her from Voleth Meir.

Since the beginning of the first season, The Witcher fans saw the bond between Geralt and Jaskier growing stronger with time. While Geralt had immense faith in Jaskier and shared every small detail with him, the bard sacrificed a lot for the monster hunter. Owing to his brotherhood with the Geralt, Jaskier took on the role of a protected and goofy uncle to Ciri. On days when the princess of Cintra sought relief, she turned to Uncle Jaskier.

From joking about teaching Geralt to smile to imitating him and Yennefer, the uncle-niece duo found reasons to laugh during tough times. Not only in the series but also in the Andrzej Sapkowski novel, the bard became a source of Ciri’s comfort. There was a scene in the third installment of The Witcher, where Ciri felt bad for Jaskier. Ciri was sorry that Jaskier was stuck with her. This showed both the character’s deep care and how they felt a sense of responsibility towards each other.
