Following Shawn Levy, Maya Hawke Now Teases ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5’s Blockbuster Movie Scale

Stranger Things can no longer be considered a regular TV series. The show has constantly upgraded its scale with every season, along with a gradual shift in tonality. While the first season was a slow-burn mystery that mainly focused on establishing the characters, the second season suddenly saw its pace amped up. It was the third season that truly upped the ante on the suspense and action, which only continued to grow even bigger and better in the fourth season.

Now that the fifth season is knocking on the door, it is anticipated to give a blockbuster cinematic feel, as has been constantly teased by the Stranger Things team, including Shawn Levy and now, Maya Hawke.

Maya Hawke recently stopped by Podcrushed where she discussed Stranger Things 5 and why it is taking an eternity to film. The actress explained all the hurdles that have "cursed" the show, both before the 4th and the 5th seasons, including the pandemic and the Hollywood strikes. Along with these hiccups, the reason Stranger Things 5 is taking so long is its epic movie-like scale, which demands "long" writing and shooting schedules. “We're making basically eight movies”, said Hawke.

A similar statement was made by Shawn Levy last year. The executive producer and director of the show claimed in his interview with Total Film magazine, “Stranger Things 5 is as big as any of the biggest movies that we see”. As per Levy, the final season is shaping up to be "major, major cinematic storytelling" that promises to make all the wait worthwhile. Apart from Hawke, another recent addition to the franchise has also weighed in on the grand scale of the upcoming season.

Jamie Campbell Bower, during a conversation with Kristian Harloff on The Big Thing show, claimed that the next installment of Stranger Things would be “bigger,” more “expansive,” and “wild than the previous one. Fans got a taste of this towards the end of season 4 itself, as Hawkins split into two halves to make room for the Upside Down seeping into the real world. Bower also discussed the scale of the fifth season.

In an interview with Tommy DiDario on his podcast I’ve Never Said This Before earlier this month, the Winter in Wartime star shared that Stranger Things’ last season “is just out of control, wild, like it’s bonkers”. If all these claims made by the Netflix original’s team truly come to life on screen, it will surely make up for the nail-biting anticipation fans have been enduring.
