Over the years, Netflix has stacked its shelves with multiple timeless sitcoms. However, none quite matched the hype that Friends brought to the streaming giant. Despite splashing out a fortune to lock in the rights for years, Netflix US had to wave goodbye to the beloved series last year. While Friends is no longer part of the US Netflix lineup, it is still available for streaming in over 20 other countries. Nonetheless, the platform is set to cushion this blow with another beloved sitcom.

According to a report by Deadline, Netflix is set to welcome How I Met Your Mother into its library starting June 3rd, 2024. This news surfaced a few months back when Disney announced its plans to license numerous shows from its subsidiaries to Netflix over the next couple of years. Recently, Netflix teased the same with a post on X, saying, “Every season of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix in the US on June 3? I'll allow it”.

Netflix had a good run with How I Met Your Mother through the majority of the 2010s until all nine seasons disappeared from the platform in November 2017. The hit sitcom will still be accessible on Hulu, but with Disney preparing for the debut of their combined Hulu and Disney+ platform next year, they are licensing out some of their titles to spread across other streaming platforms

This news pleasantly surprised Netflix users who took to X to express their excitement in droves. 

While How I Met Your Mother enjoyed immense popularity worldwide, many fans adamantly argue that its ending fell short of expectations. The scrutiny of the show's finale seems never-ending, primarily because of the unexpected plot twist it delivered. Unlike other beloved series such as Friends, which are celebrated for their endings, How I Met Your Mother took a bold narrative turn that did not quite land as successfully. Therefore, fans had a special request for Netflix to alter the ending of the show. 

Fans took to the platform to share their excitement upon hearing the news of their favorite show's arrival on Netflix. 

Some, however,  were disappointed that this deal would only benefit Netflix US users, leaving those outside the US unable to access the show.

Bringing How I Met Your Mother to Netflix will not affect its availability on Hulu, where it is currently streaming in its entirety. The series will be exclusive to Netflix for 18 months before departing. That gives fans until at least December 3rd, 2025, to enjoy every moment of this “Legen-wait-for-it-dary” series.
