The Shopping Conspiracy is a deep dive into the dark side of retail therapy no one really talks about. However, the former Adidas president recently unveiled that what unfolds in the documentary is part and parcel of his own experiences.

On a recent episode of The Drum Podcast, Eric Liedtke, ex-Adidas president, divulged the intricacies of his Netflix documentary, Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy, sharing the liberation of being out of the company, brought him. “It was a story of my journey,” Liedtke said, recounting how it was an honor on his part to raise the red flags within the industry. Although he remains part of that very industry even today, his approach has been altered in more ways than one.

Liedtke now dedicates his fashion experience to replacing the “make-take-and-throwaway” with “make-take-and-keep.” Sure, the documentary exposes the darkness, but he believes it also shows how to capitalize on capitalism positively. Reflecting on being called the “whistleblower” of the industry for bringing out the obvious, Liedtke maintained his distance with the term, stressing how it is only part of his experience. However, he did reveal how major industries featured in the film moved many.

That said, the former Adidas present also revealed how working with the giant opened his eyes, eventually.

In his conversation on The Drum Podcast, Eric Liedtke talked about his passion for sports, which led to his career milestone of working with all the heavyweight athletes, leagues, and clubs in the business. However, all that involvement somehow rendered him blind to the waste production that followed.

It was not until he was introduced to Parley for the Oceans and Canadian activist Captain Paul Watson that he really got the reality check. Then, he knew his love for sports was bringing an irreparable impact on the world he loves. As a result, he got down to business and took himself out of Adidas, making his story known worldwide with the help of Netflix to raise awareness of the issues the call for.
