Everything to Know About Netflix’s ‘East of Eden’ Adaptation Starring ‘Oppenheimer’ Actress Florence Pugh

It is time for the English actress Florence Pugh’s fans to rejoice. After featuring in spectacular movies like Black Widow and Midsommar, Pugh is all set to add another feather to her already illustrious cap. The 26-year-old has been roped in for an upcoming Netflix limited series.

Netflix is ready to entertain the fans with another drama series as they have acquired the rights for the limited-series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s book East of Eden. The streaming platform had to put in a lot of effort to get the digital rights. The fight was worth it as the series is being co-produced by Endeavor Content and Anonymous Content.

The casting of Florence Pugh as Cathy

Aside from Pugh’s involvement in the project, Ruby Sparks and Wildlife writer Zoe Kazan will be writing and be the executive producer for the Netflix adaptation. Notably, this will not be the first adaptation of the classic novel, East of Eden. It was earlier adapted into a feature film by Warner Bros, with Zoe’s grandfather Elia Kazan as the director. 

Kazan is excited to have Florence Pugh play the role of the singular antiheroine, Cathy Ames, in the much-awaited series. Speaking about the casting, the writer mentioned that there can be no one better than Pugh to bring life into a complex character such as Cathy.

“Florence Pugh is our dream, Cathy; I can’t imagine a more thrilling actor to bring this character to life. I hope we can do justice to this material — and shed new light on it for a 21st-century audience,” Zoe said as quoted by Deadline.

A glance at the East of Eden plot

With an official confirmation from Netflix still not in, all we know so far is that the series will explore the themes of duty and free will, trauma and repair, and love and betrayal. The story is about the intertwined fate of two families, namely the Trask and the Hamiltons.

Set in the rich farmland of the Salinas Valley, the novel follows closely follows the life of two brothers, Adam Trask and Charles. While the two brothers have always been at loggerheads, the entry of Cathy as Adam’s wife makes the situation worse.

A former prostitute, Cathy, betrays Adam with Charles, and what follows after that is the story of her survival. The series is still in the pre-production phase. It will most likely go on the floors next year.
