Fans of Euphoria have been dying to see the next chapter in Rue and the gang's chaotic journey. The hype is real for season 3, but there is one thing that has left many scratching their heads: the wait. Four years is a huge gap, especially after the emotional rollercoaster of season 2. So, what is behind this delay? Is it about creative vision, timing, or something else entirely? The reasons behind this four-year gap are complex, just as is the show itself.

There is more to the story of why Euphoria season 3 was not set to return to the screens sooner. While the anticipation was high, there is much more that goes into creating a show than just production schedules.

The summer 2023 dual strike in Hollywood sent waves through the world of film and television, including Euphoria's Season 3. Both the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild-AFTRA joined together in their strike against the studios, spurred by their joint call for better working conditions, fair pay, and protection against AI, resulting in a massive work stoppage. 

Productions came to a halt, either completely or partially, until the AMPTP agreed to their demands. While Euphoria was not filming at the time, this strike surely did not help with the start of Season 3. The labor negotiations came to an end, and Hollywood got its groove back, but the strike had many shows, including Euphoria, in a holding pattern for several months.

The huge success of the Euphoria cast outside of the show is one of the main reasons there was such a big gap between Season 2 and the forthcoming Season 3. Stars like Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney have blown up into major Hollywood icons, joining the ranks of the most sought-after talents in the industry. Zendaya, for example, is in super high demand following her Emmy win, and her starring roles in Dune and Challengers, among other projects. 

Sidney Sweeney's career also quickly lined up with projects like Anyone But You and The White Lotus. Jacob Elordi found success with Priscilla. With all this success, the cast's packed schedules make it difficult to coordinate filming, explaining the lengthy wait before we see them all reunite on screen. 

Angus Cloud's tragic death, who played the lovable Fezco in Euphoria, has cast a shadow over the production of Season 3. Cloud died in July 2023 at the age of 25 due to an accidental overdose. His death was quite devastating to the cast and crew, especially since he was supposed to play a major role in the upcoming season. 

In the wake of his passing, the production has faced delays, as the show had to reevaluate both his storyline and the emotional impact his absence would have on the characters. 

The controversy surrounding The Idol played a huge part in the delayed Euphoria Season 3. In March of 2023, Rolling Stone put out an exposé from an investigation into the chaotic set Levinson was working in on his show exposing its toxic atmosphere. He was accused of a vision that leaned into disturbing s--ual content and romantic abuse. What was originally about the investigation of fame and exploitation of The Idol went sharply off course as many deemed that its message was diluted into an abuse storyline of a woman. 

The backlash that followed this was huge, leaving Levinson, and the stars, to defend the project publicly. The Idol caused a stir adding strain to Levinson's schedule and is responsible for the very long wait for Euphoria's next season.

The delay of Euphoria season 3, now coming in 2025, might have a bit to do with the rumored fallout between its lead, Zendaya, and creator Sam Levinson. After season 2 ended, it came to light that Zendaya was allegedly annoyed with Levinson, who shifted his focus to his new show, The Idol, while Euphoria was sidelined. Their close bond seemed to curdle as reports of Zendaya growing frustrated with Levinson's distractions and lack of progress on the series spread like wildfire.

  On Levinson's side, rumors suggested he felt concerns about her focusing on her roles in the success films of Dune: Part Two and Challengers.

The long-awaited return of Euphoria season 3 delayed, partly because of major script issues, one of the biggest being the time jump between seasons two and three. The transition of the characters from high school life to early adulthood has kept the show's creator, Sam Levinson, thinking and working. The time jump may involve a number of years; there is even talk of a shift that might take the characters five years ahead in the future.

This jump introduces a fresh challenge for the writing team: how to evolve the characters and their storylines without losing the raw intensity that fans love. While cast members- including Zendaya- seem pretty hyped about the idea of exploring the characters' post-high school lives, all the loose ends from past seasons make the process a little more labored. 

The most significant shift viewers will experience as Euphoria's season 3 is set in motion is that the scene has moved beyond high school into adulthood. Sam Levinson and HBO took the time to discuss and reconsider where the action would unfold. Moving past the familiar high school halls was a decision that lets the show grow up with its characters, exploring new dynamics and themes without being held back by their teenage years. 

The shift to an early adulthood setting brought with it a raft of creative challenges that got Levinson to break new ground in the narrative. The process took quite some time, partly due to script delays, this came as a sad update after the confirmation that Euphoria Season 3 had not been canceled. 

The passing of Kevin Turen in November 2023 came as a shock to, especially to the Euphoria production. One of Hollywood's accomplished producers from Euphoria and The Idol, he died unexpectedly at the age of 44 years. His tragic death, due to complications of heart disease, occurred while he was driving his young son, in an extremely heartbreaking moment. 

Turen's death shocked not only those who knew him personally but also caused delays in the highly anticipated third season of Euphoria. His contribution to the show's success was of the essence, and the production went through an emotional pause as the team processed his loss.

As the cast and crew take time to navigate their own paths, the delay promises a more polished and powerful return. In the meantime, fans' anticipation is on the rise waiting to hear from Euphoria: Season 3.
