“Does anyone actually care?"- Fans Unfazed Over Netflix Scrapping 'Horizon Zero Dawn', Two Years After Announcement
It was first reported in May 2022 that a live-action adaptation of Guerilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn was under production. Sony further confirmed the report, within a week, that the game was being adapted by PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures Television for Netflix. Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction, with Steve Blackman developing the series and writing going underway in January this year. Well, until the whole project hit a brick wall.
Recently, Rolling Stone reported that the adaptation, under the working title of Horizon 2074, has been shelved by Netflix and is no longer moving forward. The report linked the reasons for this decision to Steve Blackman’s recent controversy, which also led to the shelving of another project titled Orbital. Blackman signed a multi-year deal with Netflix in 2022 to helm the project. It was also rumored back then that Netflix would hire the voice actors from the game for the show as well.

This included stars like Ashly Burch, Crispin Freeman, and Josh Keaton. Even, Stranger Things star Sadie Sink was a popular choice for the character of Aloy, which was voiced by Burch in the original game. But since Burch is a little old for Aloy, fans pushed for Sink who fit perfectly for the Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation’s main character. While this is not the first project Netflix has abruptly shelved, as one of those rare instances, fans are actually on board with this decision.
In fact, they could not care less that Horizon Zero Dawn's live-action series on Netflix is off the table.
Fans are not bothered that Netflix nixed Horizon Zero Dawn
The chances of a popular and iconic video game adaptation living up to the mark have always been quite slim. Fans have already burnt their hands trusting Netflix several times. Whether it was Dragon's Dogma or The Witcher, fans of the original games have always had some gripes about the adaptations. This, along with Steve Blackman’s controversy, is a major reason fans are not looking forward to Horizon 2074, popping the question, "Does anyone actually care".
Irrespective of the indifference, some loyal Horizon Zero Dawn fans wanted to see how this project would have unfolded.
