Hatfields & McCoys is based on a true story of the feud between two families. These families were known as Hatfield and McCoy families. While the Hatfields used to live in West Virginia, the McCoys had their base set in Kentucky. Hatfields had William Anderson Hatfield as the head of their family. On the other hand, McCoys had Randolph “Ole Ran’l” McCoy who used to make decisions for them.
The Hatfields dwelt predominantly in West Virginia, while the McCoy family generally resided on the Kentucky bank of the Tug Fork. Even though being in Mingo County, the bulk of Hatfields and McCoys supported the Confederacy during the American Civil War, aside from Asa Harmon McCoy, who sided with the Union. Asa’s assassination by a squad of Confederate Home Guards known as the Logan Wildcats upon his homecoming from the battle marked the beginning of the serious fighting in the rivalry.
