Did You Know ‘The Witcher’ Fame Anya Chalotra Had No Idea About the Games and Books Before She Joined the Show?
Anya Chalotra may be a name that is now synonymous with The Witcher, but the actress has quite a list of films and TV series that she has been associated with. Even though she is recognized as Yennefer of Vengerberg, when she first auditioned for the show, the actress was initially in the dark about the games or the books that came before the Netflix series, completely unlike her costar, Henry Cavill.
While Chaltora has become one of the show’s leading characters, she still believes that it was “great not knowing” as she got to find out more about the story as she was filming.

Anya Chalotra revealed to Collider during a phone interview in 2019 that she “didn’t know anything about The Witcher novels or the games,” when she auditioned for the role of Yennefer. She went on to talk about the process she went through before she ended up landing the role. It took three rounds, but now the world has its Yennefer and so far, she has proved that she was the right choice.
Chalotra recalled the audition rounds as “brilliant” as they left her wanting the role just a little more after every round. Her last round was with Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, the showrunner, and Alik Sakharov, the director who worked on the first few episodes of The Witcher. Shortly after, she got the call that would change her life.
While it may have been exciting to find out how the storyline would end up playing out in the long run. The actress, who gushed over the show’s costumes, also opened up about what drew her to the story when she had nothing but the script.

During the same interview, Chalotra opened up about what drew her to the role of Yennefer and even The Witcher. She went on to tell the interviewers that she was not much of the fantasy genre in The Witcher, instead, it was the “huge family thread” that ended up making her want to be a part of the series.
The actress went on to tell interviewers that she was “drawn in by all the relationships and the depth that they had.” Surprisingly, the actress’ character now has one of the most important relationships on the show with Geralt of Rivia. She also said that she found the scenes from the script to be extremely “relatable.” And now the rest is history with three amazing seasons and a fourth one with Liam Hemsworth coming sometime in 2025.
