Before settling down with Prince Harry in 2018, Meghan Markle had her fair share of flings and serious relationships. The former American actress married for the first time in 2011 to Trevor Engelson. However, the marriage could not sustain for long and the two called it quits in 2013. Meanwhile, it might surprise that just months after her divorce from her first husband, Meghan Markle almost had a date with a famous English football player.

During one of her trips to the United Kingdom in 2013, Markle had shown screenshots of her chats with the football legend to a journalist named Katie Hand. The Suits alum had revealed that the athlete was desperate for a date. Notably, the player in question played three World Cups for England in 2002, 2006, and 2020.

Footballer’s brother denies the claims by Meghan Markle

As per a report in Mirror, reporter Katie Hind revealed the English star Ashley Cole followed Meghan Markle. He was behind the actress for a date and tried to pursue her for a long time on Twitter. However, back then, Cole was famous for his colorful dating life. Upon the advice of her friends, Markle decided to let go of the offer.

Meanwhile, there is a twist in the story. Ashley Cole’s brother, Matty Cole, dismissed the story in 2019. He had described the entire episode of his brother following Markle for a date as rubbish. In a conversation, Matty Cole reckoned, “It’s nonsense, completely made up. He definitely wouldn’t have to beg Meghan Markle for a date. She’s not the kind of girl he goes for anyway, and he’s never fancied her.”

Lizzie Cundy, the wife of footballer Jason Cundy, also dismissed the rumors of Ashley Cole being interested in Meghan Markle. She came with a new angle stating how she decided to hook up Markle with Cole since the former was eager to have an English boyfriend. However, the football legend seemed uninterested in the former American actress and she decided against going ahead with the matchmaking.
