It’s not a new thing that people share passwords for streaming services among friends and family. While Netflix has also turned a blind eye to this problem even though it was a breach of the terms of service. But with the growing crisis of profit loss, they finally took action against it. In 2022, the company announced that people who do not live in the same household won’t be able to share an account. In fact, people who are away from home cannot use it.

Following the spread of this news, people warned them that they would leave the streamer if they keep on changing policies. After months of debates on this matter, it appears that the company is finally getting positive results from this challenging decision.

We all know that Netflix has faced troubled times in the past year regarding its anti-password-sharing policy. However, things have started falling into the right place for them and they have seen about 100,000 sign-ups on 26th and 27th May. It is one of the biggest growths that the company has seen in the last four years as measured by Antenna.

The recent spike has even crossed the records set by the streamer during the pandemic when lockdown made people look for stay-at-home entertainment. “Average daily sign-ups to Netflix reached 73,000 during that period, a +102% increase from the prior 60-day average,” said Antenna.

On the other hand, the monthly charge for a standard plan with ads costs only $6.99. So it appears that subscribers who don’t want to leave their favorite shows like Stranger Things and Wednesday have accepted this change. At this point, only one question remains: Would other streamers follow the company’s new strategy?

With the success that the platform achieved with this difficult decision, people might be worried if other platforms would do the same. However, this might not happen so early considering Netflix itself took this step almost after 15 years. Not to forget, the network has a huge user base in comparison to others.

Instead of following up with the streaming giant blindly, it is possible other streamers would try to lower subscription costs. Or this would take several years to plan things accordingly so this strategy makes sense. It is still undeniable that Netflix holds some of the flagship shows that fans don’t want to miss.
