Kirby Howell Baptiste reveals the unique version of Death depicted in The Sandman
In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Kirby Howell Baptiste talked about her role as Death, which is often painted by people as darkness and a deadly end. Baptiste discussed a transformed version of Death when she said:
“Most of the time when we see a representation of Death, it’s so focused on the end.”
The actress continued to explain that the human world has always seen death as something dominating and fearful that one wants to escape. However, the character has a different definition of herself: “I was there in the beginning, and I’ll be there in the end,” added the actress. Because death is not the end of life, it’s the beginning of everything in this universe. She knows her sovereign powers, yet she is quiet, humble, and self-assured.
Death is displayed as feminine energy in The Sandman
Moreover, Kirby remarked that the personification of Death in the show has a beautiful interpretation, where her complex role in the world is narrated through a much soothing and nurturing viewpoint. This will be very different from what viewers have seen in cinema before. Her whole journey has that gentle touch while she is equally aware of her strength.
Neil Gaiman, the author of the comic loves Kirby’s involvement in the project, having faith in the actress to play the role of death. Apparently, many models and actors auditioned to be Death but Gaiman wasn’t happy with any until he witnessed Kirby’s performance that oozed honesty.
“Then Kirby came on and it was just like, ‘I love you, I believe you, and you’re it,'” said the author.
