Despite the sweeping alterations, Netflix is still in good standing with its audience, as evidenced by the last quarter's performance, which highlights its continued success and competitive edge. In fact, to maintain its reputation for delivering groundbreaking content, Netflix is now diving into an exciting new Western project, Bitterroot.

According to the latest report from What’s On Netflix, the streamer is currently mobilizing for its next venture with David Fincher: Bitterroot, a Western crime thriller. Fincher, who has an overall deal with Netflix, previously made a notable impact with his first project for the platform, Mindhunter. Bitterroot is said to be one of four new projects Fincher is actively developing at Netflix. The script, written by Michael Gilio, originally appeared on the 2008 Black List titled Big Hole

As per a 2011 report from Deadline, the script was initially being developed for a film adaptation by Blind Wink Productions and Aversano Films. Michael Gilio was supposed to write and direct, with Gore Verbinski attached as producer. Various reviews of the original script, which are still available online, are, overall, very positive. While Netflix has developed a reputation for canceling standout projects, it seems unlikely that Bitterroot will face a similar fate, given the positive acclaim it has received in reviews online.

According to What’s On Netflix and various online script reviews, Bitterroot centers on an old rancher whose life savings are stolen, which sends him on a quest for recovery. To recover his money, he embarks on a bank-robbing spree and tracks down the thieves. However, all this happens while he is relentlessly pursued by a sheriff who turns out to be his own son.

Sources even say the Clint Eastwood classic Unforgiven inspired the story. While Netflix has yet to comment on the project, the outlet reports that offers have been made to two leading actors for the film. Additionally, Bitterroot could be David Fincher’s next production in line for the streamer. For fans of Fincher’s signature dark, gritty, and unsettling yet thought-provoking crime dramas, Bitterroot is likely to be the next major thriller to look forward to from the streamer.
