Before Switching Henry Cavill for Liam Hemsworth, ‘The Witcher’ Had Another Star in Mind for Geralt
Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher series sold more than 33 million copies worldwide as a book collection and 75 million copies as a video game, and garnered more than 462.5 million viewers in a matter of days as a series. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that top actors were ready to shoulder the weight of playing its lead character, Geralt of Rivia. After Henry Cavill’s exit, the directors tried to copy the assignment of his brilliance without making it obvious. This paved the way for Liam Hemsworth’s casting as Geralt.
But while Cavill’s Geralt was meant to be, there was another brilliant actor ready to pick up his sword. Surprisingly, from The Witcher cast itself.

When one of the most celebrated fantasy books around the world got the show on the road, an Australian heartthrob put on his best Geralt impression. Given his knowledge of the series, he was positive that he would bag the role, only to learn that he was up against now DC’s former Superman, Henry Cavill.
But even though he had strong competition, Eamon Farren revealed at the MCM London Comic Con that he found it “shocking.”
Akin to how Henry Cavill was meant to play Geralt, Eamon Farren, too, was destined to play Cahir Mawr. Although not the focal point of the show, he is one of the frontrunners of the storyline. However, it would have been interesting to see him play a romantic interest to Anya Chalotra’s Yennefer, given that the two previously worked together in The ABC Murders.
One does wonder, however, what it was that deprived Farren of taking on the role. Did he fail to do Geralt’s voice? Or was it Henry Cavill’s star power?
Whatever the case, the revelation comes as quite a shock as Farren’s Cahir Mawr is at his peak in The Witcher Season 3.
What’s in for Cahir in The Witcher Season 3?
If a character growth contest was taken up by Netflix’s The Witcher character, then it would result in a clear tie between Cahir and Geralt. What started as a one-dimensional character out for blood has pleasantly unraveled to be a likable threat. As Farren’s Cahir loses those close to him, it brings him closer to his rightful place next to Geralt.

As the show loses one of its most celebrated characters, it is clear that the creators are depending more on other actors. And Eamon Farren is undoubtedly one of the best on The Witcher sets. Season 3 sees finds him moving into the morally ambiguous, and soft soul yet steel exterior trope that the show loves to indulge in.
