Costumes have always been an integral part of fantasy movies, playing a major role in transforming actors into credible people on screen. The Witcher, the Netflix fantasy drama, is a show that has consistently been mindful of its costume designs that largely contributed to the show’s aesthetics. Whether it is Geralt’s iconic leather attire or Ciri’s regal gowns, Lucinda Wright successfully brought realism into the costumes in the show. Her designs were so immaculate that they ended up becoming one of the characters’ “highlights” on the show!

Even show’s Yennefer, Anya Chalotra, could not get enough of the elegant costumes she wore in the show. Discussing that forward, she once talked about her favorites, also talking about the changes that Wright brought in the costume designs as soon as she came on board.

Chalotra appeared in an interview with Variety, where she spilled the beans about her character’s relationship with Geralt. She also spoke about how she feels about Liam Hemsworth taking Geralt’s sword and her upcoming projects outside the fantasy show. In the interview, Variety questioned the 28-year-old actress about her “favorite part of playing Yennefer so far”. To this, the actress replied, “I’d say the costumes are incredible” and went on to call it her character’s “highlight”.

The actress further gave more insights about the costume evolution in the show, brought about by the arrival of Wright. When asked if Chalotra was corseted into the costumes, the actress shared how “those corsets were out” when Wright came on board in season 2. The designer incorporated some dresses that had more of a formal structure and eliminated the unbreathable corsets from the show.

The defining feature of Geralt’s character has to be his leather armor and dark clothing that helped him look rugged and fierce. Wright wanted to give Henry Cavill’s outfit, especially his armor, a more realistic spin in the second season. The Emmy Award nominee shared with Deadline that she “wanted to incorporate a new look for the armor” of the monster slayer. The motive behind this development was to make Geralt look glamorous and at the same time give him a battle-ready appearance.

The designer wanted the costume to look like Geralt’s “second skin” that could complement Cavill’s physique. Even the 40-year-old actor shared his opinion about his costume with Wright before she crafted the costumes for the second season. As per Variety, Cavill expressed his discomfort in reaching out for the sword in the first season owing to the costume. This could be a major reason for the designer to come up with an attire that would help Geralt move around in it with ease.
