As It Makes Its Ways to the Netflix Exit Gate, ‘Despicable Me 2’ Goes Bananas on the Trending Charts

With great power comes great responsibility, or so the sage once said. For Netflix, however, great power seems to come with the peculiar burden of periodically kicking its own darlings to the curb. In their latest bout of housekeeping, they announced the impending departure of Despicable Me 2. Fortunately for the OTT Mogul, what ensued was not curses and daggers but a climb to the top, that would make even Sherpa take a second look.

On brand with the movie, the days to Despicable Me 2's departure from the big N has been chaotic, faintly cruel, and totally bananas thanks to the stunt it has pulled on the viewership charts.

While fresh talent, meaningful and hopefully award-winning content, and cinematography may all be factors that Netflix values, the viewership ratings remain the boss of it all. And before making its way out the streamer's door on February 1, Despicable Me 2 conquered just that, as it climbed the top of the charts to become the most watched movie in the United States.

The animated extravaganza stands among the likes of timeless classics such as the Rush Hour franchise and thrilling blockbusters like Watchers despite having been released all the way back in 2013. The sequel of the minions' adventure was not alone on the charts, as it was also accompanied by its predecessor on Number 2. However, the streamer will still be going forward with the franchise's exit, in favor of a Matthew McConaughey hit.

With the chokehold grasp of the movie being utterly evident, it would be a crime to not release a Despicable Me 5.

Will there be a Despicable Me 5?

For a franchise that has consistently blended humor, heart, and a generous dose of mischief, Despicable Me 5 is a natural progression. But the question that lingers is whether the fifth installment can offer something new or if it risks becoming a tired rehash of old gags. The charm of Gru’s awkward parenting, the Minions’ slapstick antics, and those larger-than-life villains have carried the franchise so far, but it will take more than nostalgia to keep audiences invested.

The director, Chris Renaud too, has neither confirmed nor denied the making of another movie, while making one thing clear: he will be making a movie if there is an interesting story to tell. Regardless of whether a fifth installment goes into making, the current status of the movie is proof that fans will welcome it with open arms, and a banana or two.
