Overshadowing King Charles’ forthcoming coronation, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have breached the top headlines of royal news. Following Princess Lilibet’s christening, Buckingham Palace officially attributed the Monarch titles to the Sussex children. The children of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are now six and seventh in the line of succession to the throne. But what about their American citizenship?

As reported by a 2018 issue by The New York Times, the eligibility for US citizenship for an individual with foreign roots depends on three major factors. The first of them is the birthplace of the baby, and the second confirms whether both or at least one parent of the newborn, is American. The final hinges on if the parents are married.

Prince Archie, in this case, who was born in their royal base in the United Kingdom, automatically acquired American Citizenship at the time of birth given Meghan Markle has been on United States soil since her birth. Although it included a lot of paperwork, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have done it all to make him a citizen of America.  

However, things are a little different with the youngest of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. While their son was born on the palace premises, Princess Lilibet came to see the world on American soil. While the Sussexes conceived their third child (the second being a miscarriage), the Duke and the Duchess had officially renounced the Palace and had shifted to their Montecito abode in sunny California. 

Will Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet retain their American Citizenship?

Nonetheless, that makes Princess Lilibet Diana all the more eligible to become an American Citizen. Although her christening a couple of days ago marked her succession to the British throne with the royal decree, she is likely a citizen of the United States. 

As reported by the Department of State, the United States does not make it binding on a foreign individual to choose any one nationality. However, nor does it allow dual citizenship in its own boundary. As of now, there have been no plans for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to shift back to their royal base, especially after the Frogmore Cottage eviction. 

Thus, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are likely to be referred to as American citizens with their royal titles fully intact, as per the latest reports.
