It was recently that Prince William was honored with the title of Prince of Wales. Following Queen’s death in September, King Charles III was declared the new monarch. Thus, in his first speech as the king, he bestowed his elder son with the title of Prince of Wales. Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton took the title of Princess of Wales. She is the first one to take the esteemed title after Princess Diana. However, a petition has gone viral on social media to strip Prince William and Kate Middleton of their new titles.

The petition at the change has garnered around 38,455 signatures and it needs only a total of 50,000 signs to become the top-signed petition on the website. People are linking the petition with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Duke and Duchess came up with the first volume of their docuseries last week. In the show, they slammed the Palace for planting stories against them and being cold and formal. Is there any connection between the petition for revoking the Prince and Princess of Wales titles and the Sussexes?

People in Wales are not happy with Prince William and Kate Middleton 

The native Wales citizens have expressed a strong resentment towards Prince William and Kate Middleton for having the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales. Trystan Gruffydd is the one who started the petition, as he believes that the title Prince of Wales undermines the country and “is a symbol of historical oppression.” In a write-up on the change website, he mentioned how the title plays no role in the upliftment of the nation. Thus, they want the House of Windsor to end the title in respect for Wales. 

Further, the people in Wales are upset with the fact that neither the Welsh Parliament nor the people were informed about giving the titles to Prince William and Kate Middleton. Notably, similar protests were made in 1969 when then Prince Charles had his investiture as the Prince of Wales.

The native citizens in the country believe that Llywelyn Ap Gruffudd was the last prince of Wales. He died in 1282 at the hands of English soldiers. Following that, the heir of the British crown is provided with the illustrious title.
