Among all of Netflix's original movies, survival thrillers really seem to have a special pull among viewers. Back in 2018, Sandra Bullock's Bird Box became one of the streaming platform’s most-watched films ever. And then, Nowhere, a Spanish survival thriller, became the most viewed non-English language Netflix film of 2023. Very recently, The Sand Castle, a 2025 survival thriller, became the second most-watched movie on Netflix. And it looks like the streaming giant has no plans of slowing down.

Netflix is adding yet another survival thriller to its collection, called Apex, for which the cameras have already started rolling.

In a world flooded with sequels, Netflix is bringing an original story to the streaming platform, titled Apex. The details are still a bit of a mystery, but we know it is about a rock climber who ends up fighting for survival while being hunted. The screenplay for Apex comes from Jeremy Robbins, and Baltasar Kormákur will take the director’s chair. Beyond offering fans a thrilling ride, Apex also aims to create around 460 local jobs and pump $56.5 million into the New South Wales state economy, where the film is being shot exclusively.

This project is shaping up to be a huge win for the New South Wales screen industry. The production team behind Apex will also be teaming up with Screen Careers to bring a fresh batch of trainees into the fold, offering them hands-on experience, mentorship, and a golden opportunity to be part of something truly special. Apart from the goodwill, the movie will bring together new and old Marvel stars Charlize Theron and Eric Bana, plus Taron Egerton, who recently starred in another record-breaking Netflix hit thriller alongside Jason Bateman.

Netflix is about to unite this powerhouse trio for the first time, and it could be the start of something very promising for the new project.

The Apex trio could take the project to the next level

Charlize Theron is a powerhouse of an actress. She is best known for winning an Academy Award for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film Monster. And that is not all. She has also been nominated for two more Oscars, for North Country and Bombshell. In Apex, Theron is not just starring as one of the leads but will also produce the project alongside Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix through their freshly launched media company, Secret Menu.

As for Taron Egerton, his Golden Globe winning performance as Elton John in Rocketman is a testament to his acting abilities. Even Eric Bana has earned nominations back home in Australia, including an FCCA for his role in The Dry. These three actors have got the chops, no question about it. And this is a big win for both Netflix and Apex. As for the release, there is still no update on that. But considering the movie has already begun shooting, we can expect plenty of behind-the-scenes sneak peeks flooding social media in the days ahead.
