Ryan Gosling is way more than just a dreamy A-lister. Whether he is cracking jokes on Saturday Night Live, honing his piano skills for Sebastian Wilder, or tugging at heartstrings in The Notebook, he brings the same energy and dedication to every project. Therefore, it is a shame that so many of his performances did not get the recognition they deserved. Beyond his award-winning and box-office successes, like La La Land and Barbie, there are many underrated roles that Gosling still needs to be celebrated for.

One of those roles, from a well-loved title, is about to hit Netflix soon as part of its latest February lineup.

Ryan Gosling’s 2016 American neo-noir buddy action comedy, The Nice Guys, is about to stream on Netflix. The movie follows the strange death of an adult film star that quickly spirals into a case involving a missing girl, forcing a grumpy enforcer and a reluctant private detective to team up. This modern buddy cop comedy brought back those classic buddy tropes with a mix of thrilling action and witty banter in 2016.

The highlight of the film, though, was the chemistry between Gosling and Russel Crowe, which made the film chaotic yet incredibly fun to watch. But although it was an entertaining, action-packed flick with all the buddy movie charm, it did not quite hit the mark at the box office. Nonetheless, over time, the film gained a cult following, so much so that fans are even campaigning for a sequel to this busy action comedy.

Gosling, unfortunately, recently shared a disappointing update about The Nice Guys sequel, explaining why the franchise never expanded.

Why was not The Nice Guys sequel ever on the cards?

The Nice Guys received a very positive critical reception when it was first released. However, despite the encouraging reviews, audiences did not flock to the theaters, and it only got success with the streaming platforms, much like Ryan Gosling's recent action-packed project. The film ended its run with $59.5 million worldwide at the box office, which was a major commercial disappointment considering its $50 million budget. Gosling cited this as the main reason for the absence of a sequel during a conversation with ComicBook last year.

A sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie,” Gosling said. With The Nice Guys going up against Angry Birds at the box office, it struggled to gain enough traction for a sequel. “Angry Birds just ended us,” Gosling added. However, now that the film is set to reach a larger audience on Netflix, the viewership numbers might finally persuade the stakeholders to revive the action comedy.
