Netflix boasts a plentiful repertoire of shows that stand testament to its original show-making prowess. However, a few of them have gone on to achieve incredible fan following and a near cult-like status. One of them is The Witcher starring Henry Cavill. Or at least it did star him once and for three seasons. The 40-year-old actor commanded every scene he was in as the Geralt of Rivia, and with every swing of his sword, took the show to the top of Netflix’s charts. Alas, Season 3 marked the exit of Cavill and with him probably also the show’s fandom.

Clouds of disappointment now hang above the next season of the show as a series of unfortunate news rain down following Season 3’s finale. However, is Cavill’s exit the only reason for such uncertainty? Well, turns out there is more to the truth.

A lot of reports have pointed out excessive studio interference in Season 3 of the hit fantasy show. Even more, Henry Cavill had an upfront discussion with the showrunners regarding the script. The actor who is a devout gamer and sucker for originality, stuck a bone when the show seemingly deviated from the source material. Additionally, the actor had proposed several changes to make the script more lore-accurate, but to no avail.

However, fans did not take it to their liking as the Season’s overall viewership dropped massively even before the release of the finale. As such, the upcoming season four has a lot of redemption to make. Liam Hemsworth, who will now helm Geralt, has to win over fans too. Additionally, production on the fourth installment is on halt following the SAG-AFTRA strikes. And it does not seem that Netflix is learning from its mistakes.

Henry Cavill did have creative differences with the showrunners of The Witcher. However, it was not the sole reason behind his exit. A mistimed fortune is largely to blame. Cavill, who played Superman since 2013’s Man of Steel, had kept fans yearning for a sequel. However, there was no news in sight of the same. That was until Dwayne Johnson came in with his Black Adam movie and brought back Cavill as the iconic character in a post-credits scene. It was even announced that Cavill will reprise his role in a sequel, finally! Therefore, Cavill exited The Witcher to focus on donning the red cape. Or so it seemed.

Ironically, all plans fell flat. The Rock’s anticipated movie flopped hard at the box office. Soon after, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as DC bosses and scrapped both Johnson’s and Cavill’s return altogether. Gunn went ahead to reboot his DCU slate and recast Henry Cavill. With it ended all prospects of the beloved actor returning to the big screens and Netflix’s The Witcher. Thus, fans lost Cavill from two iconic roles at once in a massive shocker that haunts them to this day.
