Amidst ‘Emancipation’ Debates, the Will Smith’s Slavery Action/Drama Makes It Top the Oscar Shortlist for 2023 in THIS Category

Will Smith starrer Emancipation is getting into the final rounds of Oscar nomination. While it was already making buzz for winning potential awards, there was a question about whether the movie would be affected due to Will Smith’s slap gate incident. Now that the 2023 Oscars are already nearing, it will be seen how the Apple Tv+ movie fares.

Earlier, Smith was banned from attending the Oscars for the next decade and resigned from the academy. This means he will likely be not allowed to receive his own award in case he makes an entry into a category. Currently, nominations for about categories have been released. But has Emancipation made it into any of them?

Will Smith starrer Emancipation gets nominated for Oscars in THIS category

While the list for the Oscars 2023 category is still coming out, Emancipation has already made an entry. As per Hollywood Reporter, the category that Emancipation has entered is Makeup and Hairstyling. A large crew was involved in the making of the movie. While they have great potential to win, other competitors in the category are, All Quiet on the Western Front, Amsterdam, Babylon, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Blonde, Crimes of the Future, Elvis, and Brandon Fraser’s much anticipated, The Whale.

Emancipation had a budget of $120 million, out of which $35 million went to Will Smith outright. Although the movie is not doing as big as expected at the box office. With each theatre making an average of $3k so far. There is a debate about whether Smith’s slap gate incident has caused this to happen.

On the other hand, the movie itself has been criticized for being hyped up. While some fans wanted the movie to hold its release until things cooled off. Neither Chris Rock nor the fans have seemed to forgive Smith yet. As for the Oscars, they are currently said to be held on 12th March. It will be seen whether Smith’s incident is mentioned during the event at any point, but he will surely not be there to witness it.
