After Upsetting ‘One Piece’ Fans by Comparing It to ‘Wednesday’, Netflix Does It Again With ‘XO, Kitty’
Within its first month on Netflix, One Piece surpassed many other blockbuster series on the platform. Such was the allure of the live-action that no corner of the internet was spared its praises. In most genres of cinema, Netflix has injected its originals that tend to appease audiences. So naturally, a great way it markets its projects is by drawing parallels between them. Earlier this week, the OTT mogul tried to draw up comparisons between two of its original shows: One Piece live-action and the mystery teen drama, Wednesday. Fans weren’t happy, however.
Now, the OTT mogul has tried to draw comparisons between Anna Cathcart’s character from XO, Kitty and Monkey D. Luffy. Through its X (formerly known as Twitter) page, Netflix shared an image with side-by-side portraits of Kitty and Luffy. Both the characters flaunted huge smiles that were signatures of their personalities. The post suggested that the two characters’ infectious enthusiasm exudes the “same energy.”

After the Wednesday comparison brought disastrous results, One Piece fans were left dismayed once again. By trying to combine the beloved anime’s appeal w ith other fan-favorite series, the platform diminished the unique aspects of these main characters. Especially because Xo, Kitty is a much lesser-known show than the One Piece live-action.
Fans’ displeasure was reflected in the comments of the X post. Many rushed to defend Luffy’s legacy from being reduced to comparisons. However, some fans actually agreed with the streaming giant too!
Twitterati blasts Netflix for comparing XO, Kitty with One Piece
Topping every chart and acing every rating, One Piece’s success was evident from the moment it came out. So, Netflix equating its most popular pirate with a seemingly nobody enraged many anime enthusiasts. Regardless of the 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes that XO, Kitty received, some people were oblivious to the show’s existence. Others felt that Netflix was using One Piece to give “hype” to other shows.
For those who recognized both characters, it still did not make sense. One comment called Kitty from XO, Kitty is “annoying” unlike Luffy.
Few users who agreed with the similarity gave the post their approval. For them, the “perkiness” of Luffy and Kitty was indeed similar.
