After Tabloids, UK PM Rishi Sunak’s Watchdogs Are Planning To Take on Netflix’s ‘Harry & Meghan’ Over Accuracy Rows

After Netflix dropped its multi-million dollar project, Harry & Meghan, media outrage was one of the first things they encountered. Reports have it that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell docuseries is the second public outlet by a Royal that has shaken the entire Kingdom to this extent after Lady Diana’s BBC interview. While social media remains divided in their support to different parties, Royal Experts on the other hand have taken news platforms by storm. Amidst the entire Royal Chaos revolving around a single Netflix docuseries, British PM Rishi Sunak’s government has decided to take things into its own hands.
Ofcom to fact check Harry & Meghan docu-series
It came as the latest publication of the Telegraph, the UK’s Office of Communication known as Ofcom will now have the power to invade matters regarding Netflix’s accuracy. Ministers headed by Rishi Sunak are planning to pass new laws to look into the entire fiasco that has been brewing around the six-part-docuseries. According to the bills, the Netflix bighit will be out under Ofcom’s jurisdiction, and if found guilty, will be charged a fine of €250,000.
The said bills will come as a part of the Government’s Media Bill and are expected to be implemented next year. According to Ofcom’s by-laws “factual programs or items or portrayals of factual matters must not materially mislead the audience”. Reports have it that some controversies surrounding the docuseries will be going through this trial very soon. The said situation came in light of various press accusations on the couple that said the pictures are misleading.

The initial episodes featured some paparazzi pictures that caused a stir in social media. Many have claimed them to be of a totally different event in contrast to the series. While the Duke and the Duchess showed it as media hounding over their family, some people on Twitter have spotted it to be a media gathering at a Harry Potter Franchise Premiere. Various broadcasters before like BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 have also gone through the same legal framework, said the report.
