After Spending a Whopping $30 Million, Netflix Gives Up This Iconic Project for Amazon

Netflix's obsession with live-action adaptations has done it more bad than good. Although films like One Piece and Rurouni Kenshin brought the streaming giant much success, it has suffered more losses in proportion. Examples include Death Note, which was criticized for its whitewashing and creative liberties, and Cowboy Bebop panned for its poor writing and miscasting. Even Avatar: The Last Airbender also faced resentment. To add a new item to the list, a Mattel project has financially cost Netflix big time.

Having already taken down a whopping 30 million dollars from Netflix, the Mattel show has found a new home in Amazon.

While Netflix recently decided to end the streaming wars this year, the OTT war of taking up projects still goes on. Netflix was in talks to make the live-action movie on He-man and his Heart of Eternia showdown, Masters of Universe. However, as reported by Variety, the project has now officially tied up with Amazon MGM studios after Netflix scrapped it, incurring 30 million dollars of loss. Travis Knight will fill the director's chair as Chris Butler takes up writing the screenplay of the popular franchise.

Producing the film, Escape Artists Todd Black will accompany Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner. Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will further join them, filling up the producers’ room. The plot as the report states revolves around Prince Adam, who is vested with the responsibility to protect his home planet from Skeletor. However, to do the same, he needs to master his hidden powers and become He-man.

The official cut-off with the streamer happened last year in July after reliable sources estimated the all-in cost of developing was twice that which has been reported. As Netflix cited “budget concerns” to axe the project with immediate effect, it came as a major blow to the film, which has been at work with multiple studios for ages. Even before setting up its ties with Amazon, the live-action movie had been at various stages of development since 2007.

While Netflix remains the current home of the animation series, previously Warner Bros and then Sony Pictures had tried to host the adaptation. However, neither of them made it to the front screen. Apart from these two studios, renowned writers and directors like John M. Chu and McG had also been associated with it in the past, but all went in vain. Slated for a theatrical release for June 5, 2026, Masters of Universe has finally found a home in Amazon.
