Princess Diana’s first official tour with then Prince Charles to Australia was a massive success. The 1983 trip saw the late royal spilling her magic on the people. Australian crown welcomed the Princess with an open heart and she had successfully overshadowed her husband. The royal family saw similar love and adoration years later when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle toured Australia in 2018.

The people in Australia were extremely welcoming of the new Duchess as they showered Markle with unprecedented adulation. The tour was a wild success, and the papers described Meghan Markle as a person shining like a sun. It would not be wrong to say that the Australians showed more support to the Sussexes than Prince William and Kate Middleton. However, the success of the glorious tour had some repercussions as well. 

Meghan Markle had a change of mind after the tour to Australia

As per the royal author Tina Brown, after the huge success of the tour, Meghan Markle started considering herself a bigger star. The Duchess believed that her star power was bigger than the monarchy and the Palace needed her more than she needed them to survive. Following the Australian tour, the former American actress wanted to represent herself more individually. She wanted to speak about her thoughts instead of being a representative of the crown. 

“Their tour of Australia was a wild success, more successful than Kate and William’s, in terms of crowds and the adulation. I guess, it was the star power essentially that she felt now was bigger than what she was allowed to do in the monarchy,” Brown said in her book The Palace Papers as mentioned by the Express.

During the interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry had also spoken up about how the dynamics in the royal family changed after their tour to Australia. The Sussexes hinted towards certain members, being jealous of their wild success and acceptance by the people.
