With every streamer trying to establish itself as the top choice, Netflix, that had always reigned as the OTT Mogul owing to its originality, found itself shaking in its shoes. The streamer since the last year has tried to apply various strategies, such as the two-volume release of its most anticipated shows and in-ad plans to ensure that it maintains its legacy in terms of both consumers and revenue.

The seeds definitely bore sweet fruits for Netflix if the reports of the revenue generated are any indicator. However, due to an unforeseen turn of events, the OTT platform will not be enjoying the revenue alone.

While Netflix seems to be a well-known name no matter what country you find yourself in, with the streamer releasing originals in varying languages, the largest market for the streamer lies in North America. In the past year alone, the streamer generated $14 Billion from North America. However, before it could celebrate properly, Canada has asked for 5% of the revenue generated in the country.

Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced that it will be taking 5% of the revenue generated by Canada to support its broadcasting system. This practice will begin as early as the 2024-2025 broadcast year. Despite what it seems, there are a lot more layers to this new rule than just Canada taking its share from Netflix's big billions.

Netflix will not be alone in sending five percent of its treasury to Canada as the country seems to have a well thought out plan in action.

While Netflix earns a significantly large amount in the country, it is not the only. From Amazon Prime Video to Paramount, and Spotify, almost all video and music streamers generate a huge revenue from Canada. Therefore, in order to establish its declining broadcasting system, the country plans to take 5% of the revenue from streamers who generate at least $25 Million in Canada in a year.

This new strategy comes directly from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, who plan to generate $200 Million in a year to support the system. While this is a whole new arena, Ryan Reynolds has also been putting his maximum effort into building a massive studio in Canada, which will hopefully help the country achieve its goal sooner.
