“Add a piece of….” – Cinematographer Nicole Whitaker Reveals the Creative Process Behind ‘One Piece’ Live-Action Series

The final countdown to the release of One Piece’s live-action series on Netflix has officially begun. It is undoubtedly one of the most awaited projects of the year. Owing to the show’s rich history, fans from around the world are eager to witness Eiichiro Oda’s manga. Amidst the hype, the show’s cinematographer had a few things to say about the series. Whenever something as culturally significant as One Piece is adapted, people putting it together are put in a challenging position.

Apart from following the source material, they have to ensure that they are able to deliver something fresh and original. Recently, Nicole Whitaker revealed how they found a balance between taking notes from the manga and anime while being different.

One of the major questions that often lingers the fans about an adaptation is, “How is it different from the source material?” Much to the delight of One Piece fans, cinematographer Nicole Whitaker has all the answers they need. In a recent interview with Collider, Whitaker revealed how the upcoming live-action series differs from the anime and manga. She revealed that both she and director Marc Jobst were well-read about the source material, which made things easier for them. 

Whitaker admitted that they took cues from the source, but they made sure it did not become a complete redo adaptation. She further continued how they were in a constant heist to put something new into it and “add a piece of their own stamp into the series. However, throughout the process, they made sure that creator Eiichiro Oda approved every decision they took.

Netflix previously announced an exclusive fan-touring event, Straw Hats Unite, that started off a few days ago. The event will see fans from almost nine different cities get together. The Straw Hat pirate fans recently gathered in Santa Monica at an extremely exciting event featuring food games and photo ops. Moreover, the fans also got the chance to witness the first episode of the live-action series.
