A ‘Stranger Things’ Spin Off? Going One on One With the Aged up Cast Backlash, This Cast Member Wants More Post Season 5

What started with a series about a bunch of adventure-driven children has turned itself into a remarkable trademark in less than a decade. Stranger Things first hit the road in 2016 and since then the series has dropped four seasons, each as brilliant as the other. However, as one can imagine, the school-going kids that first greeted the audience have well outgrown their costumes, with the protagonist, Eleven, even having donned a wedding dress in real life, leading to a backlash.

While many from the cast and crew ensured that fans will not find the unfolding spectacle uncomfortable especially due to the real-life age of the actors, a Stranger Things cast member found quite the innovative solution that would land both sides with equal ends of the stick.

After the last season of Stranger Things came out in 2022, it has been more than two years since fans saw the Hawkins gang reunite on screen, and Stranger Things Season 5 is still suspected to be in its making stage till the end of the year. Therefore, the audiences are understandably skeptical to watch a grown-up cast go back to school simply because the set-up requires them to do so. However, Gaten Matarazzo, in his interview with Radio Times, suggested that a spin-off with Dustin at 30 would be something he would be up for.

Given that Dustin is among the most interesting characters in the series, equally balancing the drama and comedy with his antics, if the Stranger Things spin-offs are to translate from paper to reality, having Dustin at the helm would be the way to go. However, Matarazzo was pretty clear about wanting to branch out once the series ends, and then circling back a few years later.

Having swept Emmys and viewership equivalent to a tsunami wave, there is no doubt that Stranger Things is Netflix's favorite child. This shows in the way the streamer is willing to deck out thousands of dollars solely to avoid spoiler leaks, let alone the millions they spend on production. This is why when the Duffer Brothers themselves cooked up some spin-off ideas for the series, some animated and some live-action, with Netflix already being all in on the series, the chances of the projects getting green-lighted were ample.

Netflix has at various stages shown that it not only has a knack for but also loves to recycle popular IPs and with Stranger Things already having done so much for the streamer, it may try to make it a full-fledged franchise. Moreover, the brothers also spoke to Variety about how they have a live action which is notably unpredictable already in place. Such announcements by the cast and crew are cradling the much-attached Stranger Things fans to bid a smooth farewell to the series.
