No matter what the streaming season it is, Netflix is always ready with its house of cards. Amidst the streamer’s spring break content revamp, Netflix has been causing quite a frenzy with everything new on the counter. Although the dose of crime thrillers may have gotten a bit too heavy this year, it turns out the streaming giant has far bigger plans in store in other genres as well, with a Monopoly reality series on the way.

According to a recent Deadline report, Netflix has just tapped Monopoly, a reality competition series adaptation of the famous board game, following an extensive and fierce bidding process. The deal represents Netflix’s latest IP acquisition in the unscripted realm, as the streaming sensation continues to invest in large-scale reality shows with broad appeal. The news comes exactly a month following reports that Hasbro Entertainment has planned a series based on the classic game for unscripted buyers.

Netflix’s upcoming Monopoly series aims to bring the iconic game to life in a real-world setting. This social experiment contest pits contestants against each other in a high-stakes competition. Viewers can expect a complex web of strategy, alliances, and ruthless rivalry as players vie for wealth and walk the tightrope between entrepreneurial spirit and unbridled ambition. As they navigate, contestants will be pushed to their limits, testing the bonds of friendship and the true meaning of success.
Though the upcoming Monopoly series gives Netflix subscribers another reason to keep their eyes out for amidst the streamer's hour of expansion, spectators should not mistake or confuse it with the Monopoly feature film in development.
What is the Monopoly feature film?
According to a Deadline report from last month, Lionsgate and Margot Robbie's LuckyChap have monopolized the market as the studio closed a deal for a Monopoly movie for John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to write a screenplay based on Hasbro’s iconic board game. LuckyChap and Hasbro Entertainment are co-producing the project. With the acquisition of eOne finalized in December 2023, Lionsgate expanded its ownership rights to the family-favorite board game.

Robert Melnik finalized the deal on behalf of the studio with James Myers overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Daley and Goldstein have been famous for landing popular IPs and giving them the fun twist, as seen in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. While the Monopoly film was already generating a buzz worldwide, with a Monopoly reality series coming to Netflix, it looks like the streamer’s vault of expansion just got even more interesting.
