Will Smith is undoubtedly one of the greatest producers of his time not just because he has produced some of the most historic creations; but also because he has dedicated his time and money to helping smaller films to gain momentum. While movies such as The Pursuit of Happyness and Richard King have everlasting impacted our lives. His 2004 China-based movie, Saving Face, is also a miracle within itself.

If his roles have a certain sense of emotions and empathy ingrained within, such smaller movies convey similar important messages. Notably, Smith’s 2004 movie, Saving Face, chronicles the tale of a lesbian character and her struggles to come out in a traditional Chinese family. We come across Ma (Joan Chen), who lives with her parents and is pregnant. She is also the mother of the 28-year-old dutiful surgeon, Wilhelmina (Michelle Krusiec). Wil is in a lesbian relationship with Viv (Lynn Chen), a ballet dancer.

If you haven’t streamed the film yet, here are all the reasons that would make you leave everything and witness a beautiful narrative foregrounded in a traditional Chinese household.

Here’s why you should watch Saving Face produced by Will Smith with no second thoughts

It explores how these characters deal with everything and how they find a new way for themselves. Alice Wu, the director, has an abundant affection for her characters and has a sharp eye for how they interact. And eventually, the mother-daughter relationship becomes more poignant than the LGBTQ trope.

Not only does it deal with the issues ahead of their time, but it also goes beyond obvious into something much more current and meaningful: the need to make your own love, even if society looks askance. The struggle of Vivian, Wil’s girlfriend, to tell her father she would rather want to be a traditional dancer than a ballet dancer portrays the atrocities of a conventional eastern family of color.

As mentioned earlier, the Will Smith movie deals with the story of Wil’s journey as a lesbian adult. It also has the incredible backdrop of being set in an entirely different culture and society, something we rarely see in LGBTQ films.

Even for a wonderful movie that tackles significant topics, the worldwide box office take of just $1.27 million is hardly a lot of money. The story subverts stereotypes about race, gender, sexuality, and age, but it never seems to do too much.

And last but not least, it is a Will Smith production, and hence will leave you filled with a certain feeling of empathy and pondering thoughts about trivial questions of life.
