Society of the Snow is a survival thriller that hit Netflix in January this year. The movie is an adaptation of Pablo Vierci’s book of the same name and has received nominations in the Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling categories at the Oscars. Following its premiere at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, it quickly started scoring spots in critics’ top ten lists.
The movie mainly focused on the Uruguayan airplane crash of 1972 and the passengers’ resilience in surviving the hostile conditions. Society of the Snow has also got a staggering 91 % approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received critical acclaim for its technical work and sensitive portrayal of such a devastating story of survival and loss.
Nimona
Nimona received the Best Animated Feature nomination at the 96th Academy Awards. It is an animated sci-fi, based on ND Stevenson’s 2015 novel of the same name. Despite some initial uncertainty over the movie’s release, it got its worldwide distribution through Netflix in June, last year. It has since been garnering strong recognition among critics and audiences.
The highlights of Nimona are mainly its bold themes, the depiction of the hierarchical society, and its technical aspects. With a film score of 75 out of 100, the punk-rock animated film emerges as a promising contender at the Oscars.
Even so, in the wake of Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s domination at the 51st Annie Awards, Nimona is up against some stiff competition.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a short animated film that was nominated for the Best Live Action Short Film. Created by Wes Anderson, a filmmaker popular for his eccentricity and unique cinematic lens, the film is the second adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1977 short story of the same name.
Despite its short runtime of only 40 minutes, the movie cleverly educates audiences about the pitfalls of greed and the importance of being mindful of one’s wishes.
Nyad
Nyad is a 2023 American biographical sports drama that zooms in on the story of Diana Nyad, the real-life swimmer, and her struggle to swim the Straits of Florida, without the use of a shark net. Annette Bening got the Oscar nod in the Best Actress category. Meanwhile, Jodie Foster got it in the Supporting Actress category.
Considering the Academy’s track record for recognizing real-life individuals’ stories, Nyad may even have an edge over its other contenders at the Oscars.
The After
The After is another short film that marked Missan Harriman’s entry into the world of filmmaking. The short film stands in the same category as Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
The film depicts the story of a grieving driver, Dayo, who is forced to confront his grief by one of his passengers.
Maestro
Maestro is the top player in Netflix’s Oscar bid, holding its place at the top with seven nominations. This includes Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Sound.
Directed by the star himself, Bradley Cooper, the movie also received nominations for seven BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Although there are some debates about the movie’s accuracy, it remains Netflix’s most promising venture for an Oscars win.
El Conde
El Conde is a Chilean black comedy horror film that has been nominated for Best Cinematography this year. In the low-contrast black-and-white frames, audiences are introduced to the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who has been alive for centuries as a vampire.
Directed by Pablo Larraín, the movie acts as a satire of Chilean history and politics. The film hit the small screens of Netflix just four days after the historical 1973 coup d’état, in which the Chilean military officer, Pinochet, seized power.
Rustin
Rustin is yet another biographical drama film that pushed Colman Domingo for his first nomination from the Academy as Best Actor. Surprisingly, the casting director, Avy Kaufman, already predicted this Oscar nod even before the movie’s release.
From the second Domingo showed up on the screen, his powerful presence as the titular civil rights activist Bayard Rustin proved why he was deserving of an Oscar.
