Will Smith Flop Finds Uncanny Success on Netflix, Amidst His Hollywood Chronicles
After giving the box office a turbo boost with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Will Smith has proven again why he is still the top dog in Hollywood. Sure, Deadpool & Wolverine grabbed much of the limelight, but if not for the Bad Boys rolling out the red carpet for the successors, the audience’s faith would have been on the lines of ride or die. While Smith’s cinematic return was one surprise that hit home, he recently pulled another rabbit out of the hat by turning a past box office flop into a surprise Netflix hit.
Cinema is all about heroics, and it is traditionally the hero who throws the curveball, but Smith may have pulled a plot twist on steroids with this one.

Will Smith’s blockbuster resume is as impressive as they come, but not every film in his arsenal hits the jackpot. Gemini Man (2019) is a prime example—though it pulled in $173.5 million globally, it failed at the box office due to its hefty $138 million budget. But hold that thought because, according to Netflix’s Global Top 10 chart of English films from September 2-8, this so-called flop has staged a comeback and turned into a surprise sleeper hit, holding its ground for 6 weeks and cruising at number 7.
The report clocked Gemini Man with 4,600,000 views and revealed it is now rocking the Top 10 list in films across 50 countries on Netflix. It is especially winning hearts in Europe, with most countries showing love. But it is not just a European affair—audiences in America, Africa, and Asia are also rallying behind the film, proving it has global appeal despite its chilly reception when it first came out.
This trend for Gemini Man emerged as soon as the movie hit the streaming service, kicking off a surprising new wave of success.

Gemini Man might have drawn a crowd, but its massive budget could not quite keep it rolling as a box office champ. However, when Netflix swooped in and added the film (and Will Smith) to their lineup in 2022, it was not long before Gemini Man snagged a spot in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 Global Rankings. The only catch was the unavailability in the US.
Although American subscribers could not help boost its newfound fame, between March 14-20, 2022, Netflix subscribers streamed Gemini Man a whopping 11.84 million times, landing it in the third spot. Fast forward to now, with Gemini Man making a surprise resurgence and Will Smith staging one of the year's biggest cinematic comebacks, it seems like the film has found its true home... far from where it first stumbled!
