Swinging from one award season to another with as much proficiency and steadfastness, the Oscar nominee Colman Domingo made sure to leave his mark at the NAACP Awards. Especially after his stunning performance in Rustin, his consecutive shortcomings for the Best Actor Award due to Oppenheimer’s stringent reign muddied the trials. But his confidence in his craft sets him a class apart, and it is also probably why this NAACP Awards came to him with twice the luck and twice the win.

By all indications, it now seems that Domingo has shouldered the responsibility to wave the winner’s flag for Netflix after India Amarteifio.

It seems like a good day for the streaming giant since winning speeches for Netflix are barely escaping the NAACP stage center. And given Colman Domingo just bagged both the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor Awards for his role in Rustin, he has alone commanded the territory twice with authority. For Domingo more than Netflix, this calls for double celebration since, after the tedious snubs throughout the award season, this is his moment of redemption.

The tale of bravery, activism, and accurate execution that has been doing rounds of review charts for quite some time has now entered its season of receiving the honors. This is particularly a big feat for both the film and its frontrunner, as nothing tastes better than the fruit of success. Specifically, if it comes with twice the charge, it implies making its case twice as strong. While its spot on the critics’ chart already was noteworthy, its bagging of awards makes it even more remarkable.

For Domingo, this win means more than an honor since it carries weight on his emphasis for his recognition of his talent beyond his identity.

In Hollywood, actors are defined by their skills, but the underlying proponents that play fundamental roles are the identity of an actor. However, for Colman Domingo, to etch his name purely with his talent has been his primary target, and the same was revealed by him in a GQ Interview in February. He asked the publication, “Why do I have to get all these monikers put on myself?”.

Domingo added, “I’m just Colman Domingo, the actor”, whose skills take the top spot of priority instead of identity. The subject of identity is truly perplexing, particularly for actors since their art weighs heavily on transforming identities. Hence, the concept of keeping a set standard of recognition for an actor defies his efforts to skin other depictions. But since Domingo’s play as Rustin was everything skillful, this win has become his alibi for his wisdom.
