When Juan Carlos Fresnadillo promised to present the upside-down world of a damsel in Netflix’s Damsel, Millie Bobby Brown came to shoulder the responsibility, shedding her guard to own fearlessness. Hence, to become the leading lady of the reversible boat of the fantasy world, her professional efforts had to collate with her personal triumph. Consequently, to ensure a blockbuster flick, Brown had to master her phobias and subdue her anxieties.

Apparently, what led to Brown’s authoritarian progression to confront these fears was her dedicated adherence to one steadfast slogan. Therefore, given the results, there is no reason why it should not become everyone’s persistent mantra.

In a recent interview with the YouTuber Samy Rivera, Millie Bobby Brown appeared as a guest to talk about Damsel on Rivers. Fidgeting with several topics at hand regarding the movie and her experience, Rivera also asked how she overcame her claustrophobia and masklophobia, especially since Damsel included several such scenes in enclosed spaces with the usage of masks. In her response, Brown spoke like a true icon of valor that she convinced herself with a one-liner, “You just have to face your fears”.

Brown further added to be able to stand tall in front of her anxieties, she had to be “brave”. Although Brown did contemplate not having “better advice” for her audience, her resolute behavior on pressing how it is her job to get “through” her fears made the case convincing, nevertheless. Considering how Fresnadillo pledged to bring Brown as the “heart of the movie” for this epic tale of fantasy, her efforts to go above and beyond to curate a flawless performance seem rather practical.

After leading a wave of anticipation of putting a twist on the classic tale of a damsel in distress, Fresnadillo became transparent about how this could be the gateway for Brown to introduce a new perspective of womanhood. Hence, in a December interview with Entertainment Weekly, the creator shed light on his plans to present Brown as a “strong independent woman” whose primary aim would be to subvert the conventional expectations of womanhood. Consequently, his attention to detail and structuring was the first concern.

To hit the right nod of defamiliarization, his classic strategy was to introduce a damsel, who was “dutiful” to her father. However, eventually, she has her eyes on becoming an emancipated character who does not need to fall back on anyone’s savior syndrome as she is the salvager herself. Therefore, to actualize such an authoritarian figure of value, it becomes an obvious choice for Brown to come out of the cocoon of fear. And as a responsible idol, she did not choose any road of shortcut.
