It has been a decade and a half since Dev Patel started out in Hollywood. The British-Indian actor has since been wowing audiences with his acting skills and carving out a respectable Hollywood career. But it was not until he decided to dip his toes into writing and directing together with Monkey Man that he got to be the lead in an action film. While Monkey Man underperformed at the box office, it has received critical acclaim worldwide with 89% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. And now, the movie is set to make its way to OTT.

As the movie tries to drum up some buzz on OTT platforms, Netflix junkies must be wondering if it is queued up for their next movie night.

Dev Patel is on a revenge mission against corruption in Monkey Man. Playing the lead role, the actor's flick was initially lined up for a Netflix release but was dropped because of its political themes, which could have spelled trouble for the streaming giant. And then, Jordan Peele came into the picture and the movie got a major upgrade with a proper theatrical launch under the banner of Universal Pictures. Hence, unfortunately, it will not see a Netflix release. The movie is still heading for an OTT release, nonetheless.

Universal has already put it up for rent or purchase on digital platforms. US audiences can catch Monkey Man on Prime Video, where it is available to rent for $19.99 or buy for $24.99. Although the movie has not exactly been a money-spinner, it has become a critical success with an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it can still be considered a financial success overall.

Netflix Bows Out of the Streaming Numbers Race Among the OTT Giants With Its Latest Strategy

Monkey Man might not pull in as much cash as the other newly released movies, but it is still a financial win in its own way, and there are reasons for that.

While the robust reviews for Monkey Man are encouraging, its domestic box office numbers are hard to ignore. Nonetheless, the movie has already recouped its production costs. Typically, a film needs to double its budget to turn a profit, which would set the break-even point of Dev Patel's movie around $20 million. Monkey Man reached that milestone in just 10 days, indicating a promising outlook for its global release and the potential for a sequel.

Netflix bought Monkey Man for $30 million while it was in production, which already accounted for its budget. But when Netflix decided not to move forward with it, Universal swooped in and picked it up for approximately $9 million, which meant they likely only needed to make $18 million to break even. That said, even though the movie is not available on Netflix, fans can still catch the adrenaline-fueled ride through other streaming platforms.
