Henry Cavill may have given up his role in The Witcher, but he definitely ended up setting the foundation for the character all fans know and love, Geralt of Rivia. Although he put on a performance of a lifetime, it was not an easy task to figure out what exactly he wanted from the character. From how to walk to talk, Cavill built the whole character the way he wanted it to be. And a major chunk of it comes from his desire to make it British.

Henry Cavill’s existing love and adoration for The Witcher franchise played a special role in helping the actor find his voice, which he gave a little British twist to.

Back in 2019, Polygon managed to set up an interview with Henry Cavill to talk about his first season of The Witcher. The interview took place shortly before the show aired on 20th December but was released only 10 days later. The interviewers asked Cavill how he found the voice of Geralt considering there was already a different voice actor for the game and the audiobooks. To which the actor answered that he had used Doug Cockle’s performance in the game to help shape his own.

Although Cockle’s version may have been American and had “more of a whisper to his tone,” it helped Cavill with the “discovery of the voice.” But he also revealed that he wanted to make Geralt British as well as add more “grit” in his voice to help convey emotion without too many words. He went on to talk about how important that was due to the “selection of storylines.”

During the same interview with Polygon, Henry Cavill talked about how the most important thing for him when he got the role was “making sure the character was true to the law in the books.” He also praised showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, for bringing her “own vision” to this already huge franchise. But one thing that the actor said differed between the books and the series was the fact that in the show he has Ciri and Yennefer also sharing the storyline.

Whereas in the books, Geralt is seen as a little bit of a lone wolf who exists on his own terms. Cavill wound up that interview by saying that Hissrich has built “something extraordinary.” While the actor loved the show and franchise, he bid goodbye to his role earlier this year and is now set to star in an unconventional romance film. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see another new take in season 4 of the show with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt.
