Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes Has One Major Criticism for His ‘Enola Holmes’ Appearance
Henry Cavill has shed so many skins in one lifetime that it is nearly impossible to talk about one. But with the DC Universe’s re-imagination of Superman with David Corenswet and The Witcher’s Geralt swap with Liam Hemsworth, it is a lot easier to focus on what not to discuss. Aside from his superhero glow and wizard-level sorcery, Cavill’s secret agent swagger has been stealing hearts since Enola Holmes. But, while critics have been busy dissecting his acting chops, his Sherlock Holmes persona has come under fire from fans, leaving many to play Sherlock and others a little shocked.
A Reddit user, GameknightJ14, recently asked fellow Henry Cavill fans about their honest opinion on his Sherlock Holmes role in the Enola Holmes franchise. The fans’ take shimmered with a hint of regret, wishing he had more than just a supporting role while secretly hoping he would land a lead in a Sherlock movie someday. While they took jabs at Mycroft’s portrayal, the user could not help but tip their hats off to Cavill’s performance. However, others were not as diplomatic as critics.

Like the fan who kicked off the conversation, most were all in for Henry Cavill’s Sherlock in Enola Holmes. But the one complaint that seemed to ricochet through the fandom like a well-aimed dart? The glaring contrast between bookish versions of Sherlock and Cavill’s on-screen appearance. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle imagined Sherlock as a tall and wiry figure with piercing eyes, a hawk-like nose, and hair that seemed like he had not combed in a century.
Henry Cavill, on the other hand, is more of a chiseled hero, prompting fans to lament about turning the author’s vision into less bookish and more beefcake.
Henry Cavill fans wail the difference between Sherlock from the books and Enola Holmes
Henry Cavill has every feature to convince fans he is one of the most beautiful men in the habitable universe. While his 6 feet 1-inch height may fit Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s dreamwork, the rest looks a little too polished for fans who watched Enola Holmes. As fans struggled to digest Cavill’s Sherlock appearance, a user saw him “a little too beefy to believe he lives off of a 7% solution and shag tobacco.”

Another user just kept it clean with three words, calling him “way too handsome” for the character. Though some excused the handsomeness, citing Jeremy Brett, who was not that different, his “beefy” appearance coupled with his beauty had fans against the vision. A fan reasoned, saying his love for Cavill is undeterminable, but added that “Holmes is not his role.” However, even with the consensus that his chiseled appearance was the biggest blunder, some could not help but resonate his version with the “Canon Holmes.”
