Daniel Craig Echoes Greta Gerwig’s Friction With Netflix Over This Major Issue for ‘Knives Out’ Release
Having reserved a cozy spot beside the audience through thick and thin, Netflix has become an undisputed household staple for subscribers worldwide. By revolutionizing its content and becoming the carrier of all things new and unique, the platform has even earned a reputation as the jack of all trades. However, with that amount of popularity and attention, what has also accompanied are frictions and cold shoulders between the stars of today and Netflix, and a recent revelation pertains to the Knives Out star, Daniel Craig, over one of the franchise movies.
It turns out though, Craig channeled the kind of sourness the streaming giant is presently dealing with the Barbie mastermind Greta Gerwig over a film’s true potential.

Netflix has been dishing out at-home hits for a while now, but their no-theater policy is rubbing Hollywood's A-listers the wrong way. According to Puck News, this tension boiled over into an expletive-filled showdown between Daniel Craig and Ted Sarandos at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery two years ago. Two sources revealed Craig pointed to the film's standing ovation, arguing it deserved a longer run in theaters to soak up the big-screen love.
Sarandos, however, stuck to his usual script, insisting that the whole theater thing just does not fit Netflix's "model." But Daniel Craig was allegedly not having it and delivered a sharp retort, saying, "your model is f--cked." While Craig was not about to walk away from those hefty paychecks, his gripe echoes a much bigger sentiment rippling through Hollywood as this frustration with Netflix is not his alone.
Greta Gerwig has aired a more recent voice of frustration along similar lines over the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia.

Greta Gerwig has been tied to Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia movie since 2020. However, the Oscar-nominated Gerwig has expressed concerns regarding the film’s release platform, leaning on the material’s potential and grandeur scope of reception as a timeless classic. According to Puck News, the filmmaker even made friendly requests to Dan Lin, Netflix’s new film unit head about the importance of a theatrical release but has been “clearly bummed” about the streaming-only offer.
It is said that Netflix, which holds the rights to all Narnia books, wants to respect and accommodate Gerwig’s wishes. However, their business model prioritizes streaming over theatrical releases as it always has. Even though the platform’s limitations cramp Gerwig’s big, bold vision, it highlights that this issue keeps popping up more than once for anyone teaming up with Netflix on their projects.
