There has been a noticeable drop in fans' interest in the superhero genre, lately. But it only took one Halloween diversion- made on the slimmest budget of any Disney Plus MCU series- to get people excited about the superhero world again. No one really expected Agatha All Along to draw in such a crowd, especially in the middle of Marvel’s slump. Yet Jac Schaeffer defied the odds, landing the show among the top ten most-streamed series in the US last month. Despite the praises, the series misses out on being the first Marvel venture to tread into witchy territory. Despite the praises, the series misses out on being the first Marvel entity to tread into witchy territory.

Marvel’s very own Sebastian Stan took a stroll down the witchy path long before Agatha All Along was even on anyone's thought and Netflix was not willing to let it go forgotten.

It is not surprising to see Sebastian Stan playing a villain or morally shady character anymore. But one of his earliest forays into the dark side- as an evil witch, no less- often slips under the radar. Back in 2006, Stan starred as the main antagonist, Chase Collins, in The Covenant- one of the most underrated dark fantasy horror films around. The story centered on four young students at an elite private school, each a descendant of a long line of witches.

The Covenant, aside from being a perfect Halloween watch, is also a fascinating entry into the queer horror world, especially in its rather insistent denial of anything queer- despite serving up plenty of clear metaphors along the way. And while its main characters are 17 or 18, it is far from any typical high school drama. It has also been said that Stan did all his own stunts for this film, giving fans a taste of what is in store for his upcoming Thunderbolts*. Back when The Covenant first came out, people could not help but compare it to Harry Potter.

In an old interview, Stan shared his thoughts on the comparison and why he believes The Covenant was in a league of its own.

Back in 2006, Sebastian Stan sat down with Movieweb to chat about his time working on The Covenant. It's been a really, really great experience so far,” he said, clearly enjoying his dive into the darker side of fantasy. Stan then pointed out how The Covenant stood apart from the Harry Potter franchise, explaining, "It's very different in a lot of ways than some of the other movies like Harry Potter".

Stan felt The Covenant had a much darker edge than the Harry Potter films, which were designed with a younger audience in mind. Thinking back on some of the grim deeds in the film, he joked, "I'm not really sure that Harry Potter would ever do these things”. As it happens, The Covenant is now streaming on Netflix- just in time to add that little extra chill to the subscribers' Halloween watchlist.
