Netflix has silently yet surely undergone a coronation as the OTT mogul given how it is constantly setting the standards higher with its titles. From high-production originals to its increasingly diverse anime menu, and 2020 deal with Ubisoft, which has now resulted in Splinter Cell: Deathwatch anime, the streamer has really gone above and beyond.

As Netflix set out to turn one of the most popular adventure video games into an anime, the search for the iconic protagonist was burgeoning to say the least. However, it has finally ended with Liev Schreiber.

Back in 2020, when talks of Netflix and Ubisoft's collaboration first surfaced, the knives were already up in case the streamer did not do justice to Sam Fisher. And it seems that the streamer took this pretty seriously as it is only now in 2024 that Netflix has locked up Liev Schreiber as Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell: Deathwatch.

While a pleasant surprise, Schreiber's name was not really a mystery card, as even Michael Ironside, the voice actor, had hinted at it in various interviews. Schreiber's voice has already been featured in the clip released during Netflix's Geeked Week and if the teaser is anything to go by, the streamer is already headed in the right direction.

Given that he will be bringing to life Sam Fisher, the crown jewel of the series, the OTT streamer's decision to choose Liev Schreiber is a smart one. However, it is not the only jewel that Netflix has invested in for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch.

An accusation that Netflix cannot ward off despite its best tries is that it releases underwhelming adaptations. This is especially true when translation a video game into a watchable series as witnessed by the source inaccuracies in The Witcher. Perhaps in an attempt to redeem itself, the streamer has fetched Guillaume Dousse to direct the anime series alongside Félicien Colmet-Daage while having Derek Kolstad, the brains behind the first three John Wick movies, write it.

It is unclear when the series will officially hit the Netflix waters as the teaser only guaranteed a coming soon. Regardless of when it comes around, fans have already noted how the streamer has used its creative liberty to age up Fisher's character. However, given how promising his voice sounds as Liev Schreiber, it is doubtful that anyone will have qualms.
