Ye Shouts Heard as Fans Call Out Critics for Unfair Ratings of Rappers, Amidst the Greatest Beef of All Time: Kendrick Lamar vs Drake
The Kendrick Lamar-Drake beef has persisted long enough to spark some after-hour debates. While the intensity of their disputes has somewhat subsided with the dust settled and the high tides on a rest, there is growing anticipation that this calm might precede another storm, fueled by recent online activity. Fresh from the aftermath of what many consider the greatest hip-hop rivalry, where celebrities weighed in with their allegiances, Ye, formerly Kanye West has now waded into the fray as supporters in his circle are now challenging critics over what they perceive as unfair ratings of rappers.
Hip Hop All Day recently published a list on X, featuring high-impact rappers based on their average discography ratings from critics via Metacritic, rated on a scale of 100. Despite garnering endorsements from hip-hop icons like Fivio Foreign and Too Short, Kendrick Lamar's top placement with 89 points sparked discontent among fans, more so because Drake found himself at the bottom of the list with a score of 70 points, and Ye did not fare any better with 72 points.

Upon closer examination of fan complaints, the discord revolves not around Kendrick Lamar securing the top spot, but more around the dissatisfaction with several hip-hop icons being placed at the bottom of the list. Drake's presence in the bottom tier has sparked strong reactions among his supporters, while Ye's fans were equally resistant to accepting his lower ranking, along with other artists.
Many fans even struggled to accept that Lamar's discography was deemed superior to that of Drake or West, with some fans even creating their own rankings, reordering the rappers according to their perceptions of accuracy.

Even though some fans acknowledged the fairness of Lamar's score, they found it difficult to reconcile with the scores of other artists, particularly Ye's. While it was explained that Metacritic aggregates reviews from various critics like Pitchfork and XXL to determine scores, fans remained steadfast in their disbelief, understandable given their strong attachments to their favorite artists. However, now that the list is public, it is clear that fans have once again asserted that hip-hop remains vibrant and relevant through their active engagement.
