Reflecting on the nature of the entertainment industry, McLean noted that Swift had been a star for 15 years before becoming a “monster star.” He expressed hope that she remains "happy" in the spotlight, as commercial success can take a toll on mental health.

McLean drew on his experiences with fame and fortune in the entertainment industry. He considered himself “fortunate” to have navigated these challenges, emphasizing that the fastest way to falter at the height of success is by focusing on what one lacks rather than appreciating what one has. Acknowledging Swift's relentless work ethic, McLean pointed out a significant oversight: despite her exceptional abilities, she was unaware of not owning the rights to her master recordings.

Having once been the subject of tabloid headlines himself, all McLean hoped for was that Swift would prioritize her well-being while managing the pressures of “galaxy-sized fame.” As for those who might not know, Swift and McLean have a rather intriguing history together.

In 2021, Taylor Swift sent Don McLean a note and a bouquet after she surpassed his music record. This gesture came shortly after her track ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version)’ overtook his eight-minute classic ‘American Pie (Parts I & II)’ as the longest-running No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. McLean’s song had held the top spot for four weeks in 1972.

The handwritten note read, “Standing on the shoulders of giants,” suggesting that McLean’s lengthy hit inspired her to pursue similar success. McLean described the gesture as “classy.” Although his perspective on Swift’s situation expresses concern, it is clear that his remarks stem from his own experiences with topping charts and the pressures of fame, having navigated these challenges decades before Swift.
